Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Skills Recognition is a process that allows people to seek and gain recognition for their skills, no matter where or how these were acquired. It could be through work experience, education, training or life experience. When you apply for RPL, compare your current skills with the learning outcomes of a unit or module of the course. If you can demonstrate that you have already achieved the learning outcomes of the unit or module in a course, you can be given credit for that and you may not need to attend classes. Your credits will count towards the qualification you wish to achieve. In short, RPL is designed to help you to gain formal recognition for the skills and knowledge you may already have. It should certainly help you to identify your training needs more clearly, so that you don't waste time covering things you already know.
